AFSCME struck one of its most compelling legislative victories of the 2015 session on July 3 when the Oregon Senate voted 22-7 in favor of HB 2618, the union's measure to include Local 1246 members into the enhanced retirement tier of PERS. "This is an incredible win for our union, moving this many people into P & F PERS," said Council 75 Executive Director Ken Allen.

Wages Are Stagnant Even As The Unemployment Rate Keeps Falling

The economy added 223,000 jobs in June while the unemployment rate fell to 5.3 percent, according to the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Analysts had expected 230,000 jobs to be added. That’s the lowest unemployment rate since April of 2008.

NLRB Strikes Major Blow to USPS-Staples Deal

In a major blow to the Postal Service’s deal with Staples, Region 5 of the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) has issued a complaint charging that the USPS illegally subcontracted work to the office-supply chain and ordering the agency to return the work that existed on July 31, 2014, to the APWU bargaining unit. A hearing is scheduled before an NLRB Administrative Law Judge on Aug. 17.

July Union Meetings – We Need School Supplies

The July union meetings start next Wednesday, July 8th. We are asking all members to please bring school supplies to the meetings.  Our “IBEW 21 Days of Giving” Back to School Supply Drive will run from July 12th – August 1st. This year the supplies will be donated to children supported by Mercy Home, Crittenton Centers, My Joyful Heart and IBEW 21 members in need. We are also assisting families whose lives were ripped apart by the Coal City tornado.
