Now that the heat of summer has finally arrived we remind all members to take proper precautions while working outside.  All members should review safety documentation given to them by their employers. Supplemental information on working in hot weather can be found on OSHA’s website osha.gov. OSHA developed a Heat Safety App which allows workers and supervisors to calculate the heat index for their work-site, and, based on the heat index, displays a risk level. With a simple "click," you can get reminders about the protective measures that should be taken.

Social Security has a large and growing surplus, according to the 2015 Annual Report of the Board of Trustees of the Federal Old-Age and Survivors Insurance and Federal Disability Insurance Trust Funds, released today. This year’s report projects that in 2015 Social Security will run an annual surplus of roughly $9.2 billion, bringing the accumulated surplus to about roughly $2.

On Wednesday, the wage board New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) convened unanimously passed a proposal for a $15 an hour minimum wage for the state’s fast food industry. The labor commissioner is expected to approve the recommendation and issue a wage order raising these workers’ pay to at least that amount.

Jul 25, 2015 New York – At a rally today with thousands of workers and supporters, the Communications Workers of America announced that 86% of Verizon workers voted over the last two weeks to authorize a strike if necessary.  The contract expires at 12 midnight on Saturday August 1 and covers 39,000 CWA and IBEW represented telephone workers from Massachusetts to Virginia.
