  • Subcommittee on Railroads,
    Pipelines, and Hazardous Materials
    Updated On: Aug 28, 2019
    “The State of Rail Workforce”

Brotherhood of Railroad Signalmen President Jerry C. Boles, as well as SMART Transportation President John Previsich; BLET National President Dennis R. Pierce; Assistant to the President, Directing General Chairman, IAM District Lodge 19, Andrew W. Sandberg; President Amtrak Police Fraternal Order of Police Labor Committee, William Gonzalez; Federal Railroad Administration, Administer, Ronald L. Batory; and Association of American Railroads, President & CEO, Ian Jefferies, testified before Congress today, June 20, 2019, on “The State of the Rail Workforce”.

While testifying before the House's Subcommittee on Railroads, Pipelines, and Hazardous Materials, President Boles emphasized that the issues reflected in his testimony affect not only the members of the Brotherhood of Railroad Signalmen, but also the general public.

President Boles stated that one of the most important topics affecting these groups is Positive Train Control, and that PTC is a much-needed and long-overdue reality in this country. It is also critical that those who install, monitor, and maintain PTC are properly trained on how the system works and how to trouble shoot issues.

President Boles also stated that safety has always been the highest priority for the BRS —consistently fighting to improve safety for our members and the public, through measures such as Roadway Worker Rules, Highway-Rail Grade Crossing regulations, and the Rail Safety Improvement Act of 2008 guaranteeing the installation of Positive Train Control.
