Today, Workers Memorial Day, is a solemn reminder that workplaces are still dangerous places. Unions have always led the way for safer workplaces and 50 years ago today, the Occupational Safety and Health Act went into effect. This Act was the foundation for a safe workplace and Unions have fought tirelessly to pass laws, enact regulations, and provide other protections to make workplaces safer.
While we have worked hard and had some successes making workplaces safer, there is still much more to do. We have lost and continue to lose far too many workers on the job. With COVID-19, this past year has been a tragic reminder of this fact. No one should die by simply going to work and Unions will continue the fight until workplaces are safe.
Today, we honor and remember those who have suffered and died on the job and grieve with the families and friends they left behind.
