BRS on the Departure of CSX CEO Joe Hinrichs
Oct 03, 2025

The BRS recognizes the recent leadership change at CSX with the departure of CEO Joe Hinrichs. While the BRS often finds itself at odds with the priorities of railroad management, we also believe it is important to acknowledge when leadership has shown a willingness to engage with rail labor in a meaningful way.

During his time at CSX, Mr. Hinrichs made decisions which set  the company apart from other Class I railroads. He invited BRS President Mike Baldwin, Vice President East Doug Vanderjagt, and all CSX General Chairmen to the carrier’s headquarters for direct conversations on signal safety. Such an invitation was far from routine and reflected a recognition of the central role our craft plays in keeping rail operations safe and reliable.

His tenure also marked two industry firsts —CSX became the first Class I carrier to voluntarily negotiate for paid sick leave to its unionized employees, addressing a long-standing concern for railroaders and their families. Additionally, CSX broke from the National Carriers’ Conference Committee (NCCC) to pursue local bargaining, creating space for more responsive and productive dialogue with labor unions, including the BRS.

“Joe’s willingness to listen and engage with the BRS was a breath of fresh air in an industry where such collaboration should be the standard,” said Vice President East Doug Vanderjagt.

The BRS will continue to hold all carriers accountable for safety, the fair treatment of employees, and investment in infrastructure. As CSX moves into its next chapter, we call on its leadership to build upon these positive steps and ensure that the voices of rail labor remain part of the decision-making process.
